Travel times are estimates from straight-line distance and the city's average transit speed. Real routes differ, so use them to compare bases rather than to plan a day. Time at each spot is an estimate, 2 hours by default. Places that take a whole day, such as a theme park, are set longer.

How to book Chiang Mai for less

Choose a Chiang Mai property on Agoda, copy the page link and paste it into Tripdify. The extension reads the price on every card, map and search channel and sorts by tax-inclusive total.

Under the results, check the same property on Trip.com, Hotellook and Expedia, and open flights, activities and eSIM for the same dates. Card-channel prices apply only when you pay with that card.

Read from this city's own twelve months. The table below adds the temperature and rainfall for each one.

Chiang Mai's high season is the cool dry period from November to February, and the single busiest week is the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng lantern festival in November, when Old City hotels fill weeks ahead. New Year and Lunar New Year are also expensive. Songkran in mid April is celebrated harder here than anywhere in Thailand, so that week spikes too. From late February into April the burning season brings smoky air: rates fall but many visitors stay away for their lungs. The rainy season from June to October is the cheapest and greenest time, with rain mostly in short afternoon bursts.

Chiang Mai month by month

Currency and card payments

The currency is the Thai baht. Hotels, cafes and malls take cards, but the night markets, street stalls, songthaews and tuk tuks, and temple entry fees are cash, so you will use more notes here than in Bangkok. Exchange booths and ATMs are everywhere in the Old City, and since ATMs charge a flat fee per withdrawal it pays to take out larger amounts less often. Pay the hotel in baht rather than in your home currency. Some boutique hotels list rates before tax and service charge, so compare Agoda channels on the total including tax.

Traveler tax refund

Tax free shopping and VAT refunds

In Thailand ask for a VAT refund form at shops showing the VAT Refund for Tourists sign, then claim it at the airport VAT refund counter on departure, where you may need to show the goods. There is a minimum purchase per shop per day and an overall minimum.

Where booking pays off

Chiang Mai is a city of small boutique hotels and guesthouses, and Agoda carries more of them than any other site, with the same issuer channel spread seen in Bangkok. Very small properties sometimes quote a lower rate if you message them directly, though the cancellation terms are usually stricter. Trip.com does well with the newer Nimman hotels and the larger resorts on the edge of town. Paste the Agoda link into Tripdify to sort the channels by total including tax, then open the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia from the links. Tripdify does not read prices from those sites, so confirm the number on the page you land on.

Where to stay

Inside the Old City walls the temples, the Sunday walking street and the massage shops are all on foot, which makes it the easiest first base and the one with the most budget rooms. Nimmanhaemin is the cafe and brunch district next to the Maya mall, favoured by younger travellers and long stayers, and runs slightly pricier for the same class. The Night Bazaar and the Ping riverside hold the larger hotels and riverside restaurants that suit families. Out toward Mae Rim the resorts are large and quiet, but you will need a car or Grab for every trip into town.

Airport to the city

Chiang Mai airport sits about 15 minutes by car from the Old City, the closest of any major Thai airport. Fixed fare taxis are sold at a counter in arrivals and Grab picks up easily. The shared red songthaews are the cheapest option but awkward with luggage. From Bangkok the flight takes about an hour and ten minutes, while the overnight train takes twelve hours or more and only makes sense if you want the ride itself. In town Grab and songthaews cover everything, and inside the Old City most places are walkable.
