Travel times are estimates from straight-line distance and the city's average transit speed. Real routes differ, so use them to compare bases rather than to plan a day. Time at each spot is an estimate, 2 hours by default. Places that take a whole day, such as a theme park, are set longer.

How to book Hanoi for less

Choose a Hanoi property on Agoda, copy the page link and paste it into Tripdify. The extension reads the price on every card, map and search channel and sorts by tax-inclusive total.

Under the results, check the same property on Trip.com, Hotellook and Expedia, and open flights, activities and eSIM for the same dates. Card-channel prices apply only when you pay with that card.

Read from this city's own twelve months. The table below adds the temperature and rainfall for each one.

Hanoi has real seasons, and the pleasant months of October to November and March to April are the peak for hotels. The week around Tet, the lunar new year in late January or February, is awkward less for price than for closures, since many restaurants and shops shut for days. From May to September the heat and afternoon storms push the same room noticeably lower, and the grey chilly winter from December to February is cheap too, though Ha Long Bay views suffer in the haze. Hanoi carries more business travel than Da Nang, so some central hotels are dearer on weekdays than on weekends.

Hanoi month by month

Currency and card payments

The currency is the Vietnamese dong. Hotels, malls and tourist restaurants take cards, but the pho shops and cafes of the Old Quarter, the markets and motorbike taxis are cash, and Grab is easiest with a card registered in the app. Gold shops on Ha Trung street give better rates than the airport, so change only a little on arrival. Pay the hotel in dong rather than in your home currency or US dollars. Vietnamese hotels often list rooms before VAT and a 5 percent service charge, and small Old Quarter hotels sometimes quote in dollars and convert at their own rate, so check the total including tax.

Where booking pays off

Hanoi is full of small boutique hotels in the Old Quarter, which is where Agoda's inventory is deepest and where its card issuer channels show a clear spread on the same room. The smallest hotels sometimes quote below Agoda if you message them directly, usually with stricter cancellation terms. Trip.com is strong for the larger hotels popular with Chinese groups and for Ha Long Bay cruise bundles, and the international chains keep a member rate on their own sites. Paste the Agoda link into Tripdify to sort the channels by total including tax, then open the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia from the links. Tripdify does not read prices from those sites.

Where to stay

First time visitors do best in the Old Quarter around Hoan Kiem Lake, with the pho shops, the beer street and the night market on foot and a huge choice of small hotels, at the price of motorbike noise at night. The French Quarter south of the lake around the Opera House is quieter and holds the grand hotels, at higher prices. Tay Ho on West Lake is the expat district with cafes, larger rooms and a calmer pace, but it is about 20 minutes by car from the Old Quarter. Ba Dinh near the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is close to the sights and very quiet after dark.

Airport to the city

From Noi Bai airport a taxi or Grab takes about 45 minutes to the Old Quarter, with expressway tolls added. Grab is the simplest with honest fares, while airport taxis may quote a flat rate or run the meter depending on the company, so ask first. The number 86 airport bus runs to the Old Quarter and Hanoi railway station in about an hour for the lowest fare and has luggage space, which suits backpackers. For late night arrivals a hotel pickup costs little more than a taxi and is worth booking. Ha Long Bay is about two and a half hours by road, and most people use the cruise operator's shuttle.
