06 · Good to know
Know before you book in Vancouver
Currency and card payments
The currency is the Canadian dollar, and cards and tap to pay work almost everywhere, with tips of fifteen to twenty percent expected in restaurants and taxis. The thing to watch is lodging tax: in British Columbia a room carries the federal goods and services tax of 5 percent, provincial sales tax of 8 percent and a municipal accommodation tax of up to 3 percent, and some hotels add a destination marketing fee on top. North American booking sites often lead with the pre tax rate, so the price can rise by more than fifteen percent at checkout; compare totals including tax. Downtown hotel parking is charged per night and is expensive. Pay in Canadian dollars and decline home currency conversion.
Where booking pays off
Vancouver is a typical North American market where Expedia, Hotels.com and Booking.com are all deep, and chains such as Marriott, Hilton and Fairmont often match or beat third party sites with member rates on their own sites. Since 2024 British Columbia has largely restricted short term rentals to the host's principal residence, which cut the supply of downtown apartment stays, so hotel inventory sells out faster in summer. Agoda's issuer channels still differ by a few percent on the chain hotels and are worth comparing. Paste an Agoda link into Tripdify to sort every issuer channel by total including tax and open the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia.
Where to stay
Downtown and Coal Harbour are the easiest first visit base, near Canada Place and the Stanley Park seawall with SkyTrain stations close by, at the highest prices. The West End, a residential district between Stanley Park and English Bay, is quieter and has older midsize hotels at a step down in price. Yaletown is full of restaurants and bars and has a Canada Line station straight to the airport. Gastown has the historic streets, but the blocks of East Hastings just east of it are best avoided at night. North Vancouver is fifteen minutes from downtown by SeaBus and close to Capilano and Grouse Mountain, while Richmond is near the airport, full of Asian food and cheaper than downtown.
Airport to the city
The SkyTrain Canada Line is the best way from Vancouver Airport. It reaches Waterfront station downtown in about twenty five minutes, stopping at Yaletown and the main downtown stations, with a branch toward Richmond. Tap a Compass card or a contactless credit card at the gates; a 5 dollar airport surcharge applies only to trips starting at the airport stations. A taxi takes twenty to thirty minutes into downtown, and Uber and Lyft also pick up at the airport, which suits heavy luggage or a group. Most visa exempt visitors flying in, except US citizens, need a Canadian eTA before boarding, so apply on the official government site several days ahead.
