Travel times are estimates from straight-line distance and the city's average transit speed. Real routes differ, so use them to compare bases rather than to plan a day. Time at each spot is an estimate, 2 hours by default. Places that take a whole day, such as a theme park, are set longer.

How to book London for less

Choose a London property on Agoda, copy the page link and paste it into Tripdify. The extension reads the price on every card, map and search channel and sorts by tax-inclusive total.

Under the results, check the same property on Trip.com, Hotellook and Expedia, and open flights, activities and eSIM for the same dates. Card-channel prices apply only when you pay with that card.

Cheapest Jan, Feb, NovPeak Jun, Jul, Aug

Read from this city's own twelve months. The table below adds the temperature and rainfall for each one.

London rooms peak from June through August and again from Christmas into the New Year. The London Marathon weekend in April, the Chelsea Flower Show in May and Wimbledon from late June into early July lift prices in their own districts, and bank holiday weekends push rates up across the city. The cheapest stretch is mid January through February, with early November, before the Christmas lights and markets, a close second. Business districts such as the City and Canary Wharf empty out on weekends, so the same room there can be far cheaper on a Saturday than a Tuesday, while the West End works the other way round.

London month by month

Currency and card payments

The currency is the pound sterling, and London is close to cashless. Contactless is the default everywhere, buses do not take cash at all, and tapping a card at the Tube gates applies the daily fare cap automatically, so pick one card with low foreign transaction fees and use it for transport. Hotel prices are quoted with 20 percent VAT already included, and London has not charged a per person per night city tax the way Paris and Rome do, though a visitor levy has been discussed, so glance at the tax line on the booking page. Pay in pounds at checkout rather than accepting a conversion to your home currency.

Traveler tax refund

Tax free shopping and VAT refunds

The United Kingdom withdrew its tourist VAT refund scheme in 2021, so as a rule visitors can no longer reclaim VAT on goods they buy in a shop and carry home. About the only exception is when the retailer ships the goods directly abroad for you.

Where booking pays off

Booking.com carries the deepest London inventory, as it does across Europe. Premier Inn, the largest British chain, sells almost entirely through its own site and rarely appears on comparison tools, and Hilton, IHG and Marriott member rates often match or beat the third parties. Agoda's card issuer channels apply in London too, but the spread between them is narrower than in Asia, so treat a few percent as a good result. Tripdify reads the Agoda channels, sorts them by total including tax, and links the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia. It does not read prices from those sites, so open Booking.com and the chain's own page on the same dates and compare the totals yourself.

Where to stay

First time visitors are best in the West End around Covent Garden and Soho, which is also the most expensive. South Kensington and Earl's Court are close to the museums, sit on the Piccadilly line straight from Heathrow and have a large stock of mid range and budget hotels. Paddington has the Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line, which suits the first and last night, and King's Cross is the place for Eurostar trips to Paris. Shoreditch is younger with better food, and Canary Wharf and the City become noticeably cheaper for the same class on weekends. On a tight budget Stratford reaches the centre quickly on the Elizabeth and Jubilee lines at a lower price tier.

Airport to the city

Heathrow is the main gateway. The Elizabeth line reaches Paddington in a little over 30 minutes at a fair price and is the sensible default, the Heathrow Express does it in 15 minutes for considerably more, and the Piccadilly line takes about 50 minutes and costs least. Taxis face heavy traffic and are hard to predict on both time and fare, so they only make sense for two or more people. From Gatwick the Gatwick Express takes about 30 minutes to Victoria and Thameslink is cheaper, while Stansted has the Stansted Express to Liverpool Street in around 50 minutes. If a low cost fare lands you at Luton or Stansted, add the time and cost of the transfer before deciding it is a bargain.
