Currency and card payments
The currency is the euro. Cards and contactless work in hotels, department stores and most restaurants, but some Heurigen wine taverns, traditional cafes and market stalls still take cash only, so carry a few euros. When an ATM or card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in euros at your bank's rate. Vienna levies its accommodation tax as a percentage of the net room rate, which rose to 5 percent on 1 July 2026, with a further increase already scheduled for 2027. Many booking sites leave it out of the online total and the hotel adds it at checkout, so check whether it is included before you compare prices.
Where booking pays off
Booking.com has the deepest Vienna inventory, including most apartments and family run pensions. Chains such as Marriott, Hilton and Accor, and value chains such as Motel One, often match or beat third parties with member rates on their own sites, so they are worth one direct check. Agoda's card issuer channels apply in Vienna, but the spread is narrower than in Asia, usually a few percent at most, and the totals may leave out the accommodation tax. Tripdify reads the Agoda channels, sorts them by total including tax and links the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia. It does not read prices from those sites, so open them and compare the totals yourself before paying.
Where to stay
Innere Stadt, the first district around St. Stephen's Cathedral, puts the Hofburg and the Opera on foot but costs the most. Across the Danube Canal, Leopoldstadt has the U1 and U2 lines and the Prater close by, and is clearly cheaper for the same class. Landstrasse around Wien Mitte is where the airport connections start, which helps on the first and last night. Wieden, near the Naschmarkt and Karlsplatz, is quiet with plenty of restaurants, while Mariahilf and Neubau sit along the Mariahilfer Strasse shopping street and the MuseumsQuartier with a younger crowd and many boutique hotels. The area around the Hauptbahnhof has newer chain hotels and direct trains to the airport, which suits heavy luggage.
Airport to the city
The fastest reliable route from Vienna International Airport is an ÖBB Railjet or Intercity train to the Hauptbahnhof, nonstop in about 15 minutes and running twice an hour. The airport lies outside the city boundary, so a Vienna 24 hour ticket alone is not valid and you need a ticket covering the airport section. The City Airport Train, normally 16 minutes to Wien Mitte, is replaced by buses from 7 September 2026 to the end of October 2027 while the central rail line is rebuilt, and the S7 suburban train stops short at St. Marx instead of reaching the centre. During that period the train to the Hauptbahnhof and a change to the metro is the better choice. Taxis, Uber and Bolt take around 25 to 35 minutes to the centre.

Mid January after the holidays, February weekdays without a large congress, and early November before the Christmas markets open. The market weeks, New Year's Eve and summer are the dearest.

Since 1 July 2026 it is 5 percent of the net room rate, with a further rise planned for 2027. It is often left out of the online total and collected by the hotel.
What is the best way from Vienna airport to the city?
The Railjet or Intercity train to the Hauptbahnhof, about 15 minutes. Until the end of October 2027 the City Airport Train runs as a replacement bus.
