Travel times are estimates from straight-line distance and the city's average transit speed. Real routes differ, so use them to compare bases rather than to plan a day. Time at each spot is an estimate, 2 hours by default. Places that take a whole day, such as a theme park, are set longer.

How to book Istanbul for less

Choose a Istanbul property on Agoda, copy the page link and paste it into Tripdify. The extension reads the price on every card, map and search channel and sorts by tax-inclusive total.

Under the results, check the same property on Trip.com, Hotellook and Expedia, and open flights, activities and eSIM for the same dates. Card-channel prices apply only when you pay with that card.

Read from this city's own twelve months. The table below adds the temperature and rainfall for each one.

Istanbul is most expensive from April to May, when the tulips are out, and again from September to October. June through August is hot but still busy with European visitors, and Christmas and New Year's Eve add a spike. The two Islamic holidays, Eid al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan and Eid al-Adha, send Turkish families travelling and lift hotel rates for about a week each, and since they move roughly eleven days earlier every year you should check the dates before booking. Ramadan itself changes little for tourist hotels. The cheapest stretch is mid November through February, when rain is frequent and the same room drops noticeably.

Istanbul month by month

Currency and card payments

The currency is the Turkish lira, and because inflation has been high many hotels quote their rates in euros or dollars instead. Cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops, but cash is easier at Grand Bazaar stalls, corner shops and in taxis, so withdraw a modest amount of lira from a bank ATM and skip the airport exchange counters. ATMs add fees and will offer to bill in your home currency, which you should decline. Turkey introduced an accommodation tax in 2023 that is normally folded into the quoted rate, so there is rarely a separate per person city tax to pay at the desk as in Europe. Pay in whichever currency the hotel prices in.

Where booking pays off

Agoda's Istanbul inventory is unusually broad for a city this far west, and its card issuer channels apply, though the spread is smaller than in Southeast Asia. Booking.com is blocked from selling to customers inside Turkey but works normally when you book from abroad, and it has the deepest inventory. Because many hotels price in euros or dollars, each site converts differently and the same room can look cheaper or dearer than it is, so compare in a single billing currency. Boutique hotels will often add breakfast or an airport pickup if you book directly. Tripdify reads the Agoda channels, sorts them by total including tax and links the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia, but it does not read prices from those sites.

Where to stay

First time visitors do well in Sultanahmet, where Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are on foot and the many boutique hotels are cheaper than the new city for the same class, though it is quiet after dark. Galata and Karaköy have the best cafes and restaurants and sit between the old and new city, so both are easy to reach. Taksim and Beyoğlu stay lively late, hold the widest choice of hotels and connect by metro toward the new airport. Beşiktaş and Nişantaşı gather the luxury hotels and shopping, and anything with a Bosphorus view is the most expensive. Kadıköy on the Asian side is local, cheaper and a short ferry ride from the European side.

Airport to the city

Istanbul Airport, on the European side, is far from the centre. The M11 metro reaches Gayrettepe in about 40 minutes, and a change to the M2 brings you to Taksim in a little over an hour, while the Havaist airport bus takes one to one and a half hours to Taksim or Sultanahmet depending on traffic. Taxis are metered and take 45 minutes to an hour, which is reasonable for two or more people with luggage. Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side has the M4 metro to Kadıköy in about 45 minutes and the Havabus to Taksim in around an hour and a half. At either airport buy an Istanbulkart, which covers metro, bus and ferry on one card.
