Travel times are estimates from straight-line distance and the city's average transit speed. Real routes differ, so use them to compare bases rather than to plan a day. Time at each spot is an estimate, 2 hours by default. Places that take a whole day, such as a theme park, are set longer.

How to book Taipei for less

Choose a Taipei property on Agoda, copy the page link and paste it into Tripdify. The extension reads the price on every card, map and search channel and sorts by tax-inclusive total.

Under the results, check the same property on Trip.com, Hotellook and Expedia, and open flights, activities and eSIM for the same dates. Card-channel prices apply only when you pay with that card.

Cheapest May, Jun, SepPeak Feb

Read from this city's own twelve months. The table below adds the temperature and rainfall for each one.

Taipei is most expensive over Lunar New Year, when many restaurants and shops also close for several days, and again around the October national day holiday and the New Year countdown. The plum rain season in May and June and the typhoon months from July to September are the cheaper stretches, with the caveat that a typhoon can cancel flights, so pick refundable rates in summer. Autumn from October to November has the most comfortable weather and moderate prices. Weekend nights cost clearly more because of the short break traffic from Korea, Japan and Hong Kong.

Taipei month by month

Currency and card payments

The currency is the New Taiwan dollar. Hotels, department stores and convenience stores take cards, but night markets, small restaurants and older shops are often cash only, so cash still matters here. An EasyCard covers the metro, buses and convenience store purchases and saves fumbling with coins. Pay the hotel in local currency rather than accepting a conversion to your home currency. Taipei charges no separate hotel or tourist tax, so the gap between the headline rate and the total is small, though some hotels add a 10 percent service charge.

Traveler tax refund

Tax free shopping and VAT refunds

In Taiwan authorised stores refund small amounts on the spot, and otherwise you take a refund claim slip and reclaim the sales tax at the airport tax refund counter or kiosk with your passport as you leave. A minimum purchase and a time limit for taking the goods out apply.

Where booking pays off

Taipei draws a large share of its hotel demand from Korea, Japan and Hong Kong, so Agoda's card issuer channels show a clear spread here and are worth checking before you pay. Trip.com attaches its own discounts to Taiwanese hotels often enough that it deserves a look, and many local hotels publish a breakfast inclusive rate on their own site. Klook and KKday dominate activities, rail passes and airport pickups in Taiwan, but Tripdify does not read their prices. Paste the Agoda link into Tripdify to sort the channels by total including tax, then open the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia from the links.

Where to stay

Around Taipei Main Station is the easiest first base: the airport MRT, two metro lines and the high speed rail all meet there. Ximending has the youth shopping streets, late night food and the densest cluster of budget hotels. Zhongshan is quieter, with cafes and small boutiques, and suits a second visit. Xinyi around Taipei 101 is the upscale hotel district with the department stores and costs the most. If you fly into Songshan, the city airport, hotels in Zhongshan or along the Songshan line save the cross town ride.

Airport to the city

From Taoyuan airport the express airport MRT reaches Taipei Main Station in about 35 to 40 minutes for a modest fare. Airport buses run past midnight for late arrivals, and a metered taxi takes about 40 minutes to an hour depending on traffic. Songshan, the city airport served from Tokyo Haneda and Seoul Gimpo, is on the metro and puts you anywhere central within 20 minutes. For two or more people with luggage a private pickup booked through Klook or KKday costs about the same as a taxi and skips the queue.
