06 · Good to know

Know before you book in Amsterdam

Currency and card payments

The currency is the euro. The Netherlands is one of the most card based countries in Europe, so cash is rarely needed and many shops and cafes do not take it at all. Small shops occasionally decline foreign credit cards, so carrying two cards on different networks is a sensible backup. When a terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in euros. Taxes weigh heavily on rooms here: the city tourist tax is 12.5 percent of the room price excluding VAT, and VAT on accommodation rose from 9 percent to 21 percent in January 2026. Some booking sites leave the tourist tax out of the online total, so always compare totals with every tax included.

Where booking pays off

Booking.com is headquartered in Amsterdam and has the deepest inventory here, down to small hotels in converted canal houses. Chains such as citizenM, Marriott, Hilton and Accor often match or beat third parties with member rates on their own sites, so they are worth one direct check. Agoda's card issuer channels apply in Amsterdam, but the spread is narrower than in Asia, and because sites differ in whether the tourist tax is in the headline price, the ranking can flip once every tax is added. Tripdify reads the Agoda channels, sorts them by total including tax and links the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia. It does not read prices from those sites, so open them and compare the totals yourself before paying.

Where to stay

Centrum around Dam Square and Centraal Station puts everything on foot and the airport train on the doorstep, but the lanes near the red light district stay crowded and loud late into the night. The Canal Ring and the Jordaan are the most Amsterdam of all, with boutique hotels in converted canal houses, but they cost the most and many have small rooms and steep stairs. The Museum Quarter around the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum is quiet and upmarket, a short tram ride from the centre. De Pijp has the Albert Cuyp Market, plenty of restaurants and metro line 52. Oost is clearly cheaper for the same class, and Noord, reached by free ferry from behind Centraal Station, has newer hotels at good value.

Airport to the city

The train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal takes 15 to 20 minutes, runs every few minutes by day and keeps going through the night, which makes it the fastest and cheapest option. Just tap a contactless card at the gates, with no separate ticket to buy. If you are staying near the Museum Quarter or Leidseplein, bus 397, the Amsterdam Airport Express, leaves from outside Schiphol Plaza and takes around 30 minutes. Taxis reach the centre in 20 to 30 minutes but are expensive, and Uber is also available. From Centraal Station, change to a tram or the metro; the Canal Ring has many narrow streets that are awkward with a suitcase, so ride the tram to the nearest stop rather than walking.
