Travel times are estimates from straight-line distance and the city's average transit speed. Real routes differ, so use them to compare bases rather than to plan a day. Time at each spot is an estimate, 2 hours by default. Places that take a whole day, such as a theme park, are set longer.

How to book Shanghai for less

Choose a Shanghai property on Agoda, copy the page link and paste it into Tripdify. The extension reads the price on every card, map and search channel and sorts by tax-inclusive total.

Under the results, check the same property on Trip.com, Hotellook and Expedia, and open flights, activities and eSIM for the same dates. Card-channel prices apply only when you pay with that card.

Read from this city's own twelve months. The table below adds the temperature and rainfall for each one.

Shanghai is most pleasant in spring from March to May and autumn from September to November, and hotel prices rise with the weather. Mid June to early July is the plum rain season, July and August are hot and humid, and typhoons can brush the city in August and September. The dearest weeks are the National Day golden week from October 1 and the Labour Day holiday in early May, when domestic travellers fill the city, plus the China International Import Expo in early November, which floods the business hotels. Over Chinese New Year the city empties and rooms get cheap, but many restaurants and shops close for days. Winter outside that holiday is the low point.

Currency and card payments

The currency is the yuan, and payment runs almost entirely on Alipay and WeChat Pay, so the phone comes before the card. Both apps accept foreign cards, and setting one up before you fly covers taxis, convenience stores and most restaurants. Hotels, department stores and larger restaurants take international cards directly, while small shops may accept only the apps, and since cash remains legal tender a small reserve is sensible. Hotel rates in China are usually displayed with tax and service included, but sites differ, so compare on the total. Pay in yuan and decline home currency conversion.

Where booking pays off

Shanghai is Trip.com's home city, and for Chinese hotels it often beats Agoda on both inventory and price, with many local chains carrying rates that appear only there. International chains and luxury hotels are a different story, where Agoda's issuer channels still differ from each other by a few percent and are worth a look. Check the chain's own member rate and breakfast inclusion as well. Paste the Agoda link into Tripdify to sort every issuer channel by total including tax, then open the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia from the links. Tripdify does not read Trip.com prices, so compare them yourself.

Where to stay

First time visitors do well around People's Square and East Nanjing Road, where metro lines 1, 2 and 8 meet and the Bund is a short walk. The Bund itself holds the river view luxury hotels at the highest prices. Jing'an mixes the shopping and restaurants of West Nanjing Road with a deep stock of business hotels. The former French Concession around Xuhui and Huaihai Road has the plane tree streets, cafes and boutique hotels. Lujiazui across the river in Pudong has the tower hotels with the skyline views but goes quiet at night, and Hongqiao suits a stop between domestic flights and high speed trains.

Airport to the city

Most international flights use Pudong, which is far from the centre. The maglev reaches Longyang Road in about eight minutes, and with a metro change the whole trip to People's Square is around fifty minutes, while metro line 2 alone takes over an hour. A taxi takes forty five minutes to an hour on the meter and is reasonable value for two or more, and the Didi app with a foreign card linked makes hailing simple. Late at night there are airport night buses, but a taxi is easier with luggage. Hongqiao airport is much closer, thirty to forty minutes into town on metro lines 2 or 10.

Shanghai hotels: common questions

When are Shanghai hotels cheapest?

January and February outside Chinese New Year, and the hot months of July and August. Avoid the National Day golden week in early October, Labour Day in early May and the Import Expo in early November.

Is Trip.com cheaper than Agoda for Shanghai hotels?

For Chinese local chains Trip.com usually leads on inventory and price, while Agoda's issuer channels can win on international chains. Compare the channels first, then check Trip.com on the same dates.

Can I pay by card in Shanghai?

At hotels, department stores and larger restaurants, yes. Everywhere else link your card to Alipay or WeChat Pay before you travel, and carry a little cash as backup.
