Travel times are estimates from straight-line distance and the city's average transit speed. Real routes differ, so use them to compare bases rather than to plan a day. Time at each spot is an estimate, 2 hours by default. Places that take a whole day, such as a theme park, are set longer.

How to book Rome for less

Choose a Rome property on Agoda, copy the page link and paste it into Tripdify. The extension reads the price on every card, map and search channel and sorts by tax-inclusive total.

Under the results, check the same property on Trip.com, Hotellook and Expedia, and open flights, activities and eSIM for the same dates. Card-channel prices apply only when you pay with that card.

Cheapest Jan, Feb, NovPeak Apr, May, Jun, Sep, Oct

Read from this city's own twelve months. The table below adds the temperature and rainfall for each one.

Rome is most expensive from April to June and September to October, with Holy Week and Easter pushing the whole city up because of the Vatican events, and Christmas through New Year costly as well. July and August sit a little below spring and autumn because of the heat, though many family run places close around Ferragosto on August 15. The cheapest months are November and mid January through February, when queues at the major sites are short too. Demand in Rome is mostly leisure rather than business, so the gap between weekend and weekday rates is smaller than in cities like London or Paris.

Rome month by month

Currency and card payments

The currency is the euro. Hotels and chains take cards without fuss, but neighbourhood trattorias, markets and gelato counters can still prefer cash, and although taxis are required to accept cards you may hear that the machine is broken, so keep some notes. Rome charges the contributo di soggiorno, a per person per night city tax set by hotel star rating, and most booking sites leave it out of the online total and let the hotel collect it at checkout. It climbs with the star rating and adds up on a longer stay. At checkout pay in euros rather than accepting a conversion to your home currency.

Traveler tax refund

Tax free shopping and VAT refunds

Italy is also in the EU VAT refund system. Take a tax free form from the shop and get customs validation, now the digital OTELLO stamp, at the airport when you leave the EU. A minimum purchase and an export time limit apply, and you must be a non EU resident.

Where booking pays off

Rome has a huge stock of small hotels and B&Bs, many of which list only on Booking.com, and as elsewhere in Europe Booking.com has the deepest inventory. Small properties will sometimes knock the commission off if you book directly by email or through their own site. Agoda's card issuer channels apply in Rome, but the spread is narrower than in Asia and the totals usually leave out the city tax. Marriott, Hilton and IHG properties tend to match or beat third parties with member rates. Tripdify reads the Agoda channels, sorts them by total including tax and links the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia, but it does not read prices from those sites, so compare their totals yourself.

Where to stay

The Centro Storico around the Pantheon and Piazza Navona puts everything on foot but is the most expensive, and its cobbled lanes are awkward with a wheeled suitcase. The streets around Termini station are noticeably cheaper for the same class and sit on the airport train and both metro lines, though the area is drab, so read reviews carefully. Monti beside the Colosseum balances atmosphere and access and suits a first visit, while Trastevere is lively in the evening but has no metro. Prati next to the Vatican is quiet with fairly priced restaurants and works well for families. On a longer stay it is reasonable to spend the first night near Termini and move into the centre afterwards.

Airport to the city

Fiumicino is the main airport. The Leonardo Express to Termini takes about 32 minutes and is the most reliable option, while the slower FL1 regional line serves Trastevere and Tiburtina for less, which is handy if you are staying on that side. Taxis have a fixed fare to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, so for two or more people with bags they cost about the same per person as the train, and you can refuse any driver who wants to run the meter instead. Airport buses to Termini are the cheapest at around an hour but suffer in traffic. Ciampino, used by low cost carriers, is about 40 minutes from Termini by bus.

Rome hotels: common questions

When are Rome hotels cheapest?

November and mid January through February. Avoid Holy Week, April to June, September to October and the Christmas holidays.

How much is the Rome city tax and when do I pay it?

It is charged per person per night and rises with the star rating. Most booking sites leave it out of the total, and the hotel collects it at checkout.

Is it safe to stay near Termini station in Rome?

It is convenient and cheaper for the same class, but the streets are drab. Read reviews carefully, or stay there only for the first night and then move to Monti or the centre.
