Travel times are estimates from straight-line distance and the city's average transit speed. Real routes differ, so use them to compare bases rather than to plan a day. Time at each spot is an estimate, 2 hours by default. Places that take a whole day, such as a theme park, are set longer.

How to book Nagoya for less

Choose a Nagoya property on Agoda, copy the page link and paste it into Tripdify. The extension reads the price on every card, map and search channel and sorts by tax-inclusive total.

Under the results, check the same property on Trip.com, Hotellook and Expedia, and open flights, activities and eSIM for the same dates. Card-channel prices apply only when you pay with that card.

Nagoya's demand is driven more by business and events than by tourism, so prices move with the calendar of trade shows and concerts rather than with the seasons. Weekdays fill with business travelers and weekends can be the cheaper nights, the reverse of Tokyo or Osaka. Golden Week, Obon in mid August and the New Year holiday are still expensive, and a big concert at the Nagoya Dome or an exhibition at Port Messe can lift the whole city overnight. Mid January through February and the June rainy season are the reliable low points, and the city is a common cheaper base for visiting Takayama, Ise or Shirakawago.

Nagoya month by month

Currency and card payments

The currency is the yen. Hotels and department stores around Nagoya Station and Sakae take cards, but the Osu shopping arcade, neighbourhood coffee shops famous for their morning sets and small restaurants can still be cash only, so keep some notes. Pay in yen at checkout rather than accepting the site's conversion to your home currency. Nagoya has discussed an accommodation tax of its own, so check whether the total shown at booking includes any local tax. The Manaca transit card, or any of the nationwide IC cards, works on the subway, Meitetsu trains and in convenience stores.

Traveler tax refund

Tax free shopping and VAT refunds

In Japan the tax comes off in the shop. Show your passport at a tax free counter and spend over the store minimum, and the consumption tax is deducted on the spot; consumables such as food and cosmetics are sealed in a bag you keep closed until you leave the country.

Where booking pays off

Nagoya sees fewer Korean and Taiwanese bookings than Tokyo or Osaka, so Agoda's issuer channels sometimes sit close together, but the city is dense with chain business hotels and the channels can still differ by a few percent on the same room. Japanese chains sometimes beat every third party with a member rate, and because demand is so business heavy the domestic portals Rakuten Travel and Jalan carry deep inventory. Trip.com is strong on Japanese hotels with its own promotions. Tripdify sorts the Agoda channel prices by total including tax and links the same dates on Trip.com, Expedia and others, but reads no prices from those sites.

Where to stay

Around Nagoya Station is the obvious base for a short trip or business: the Shinkansen, the Meitetsu airport line and the subway all meet there and chain business hotels line every block. Sakae is the shopping and nightlife centre, five minutes away by subway, and suits a leisure trip better. Fushimi sits between the two, quieter and a little cheaper. Osu and Kanayama are noticeably cheaper for the same class, and Kanayama has the airport train as well. The Nagoya Dome area only makes sense on a concert or baseball day.

Airport to the city

From Chubu Centrair International Airport the Meitetsu Mu Sky reaches Nagoya Station in about 30 minutes, and the ordinary limited express takes about 40 minutes for a lower fare. The Mu Sky is all reserved and adds a surcharge, but it is the easier ride with luggage, and changing to the subway at Kanayama gets you to Sakae quickly. The limousine bus takes about an hour to Nagoya Station and Sakae and rarely beats the train. A taxi is a long expensive ride. From Tokyo the Shinkansen takes about an hour and forty minutes, and from Osaka under an hour.

Nagoya hotels: common questions

When are Nagoya hotels cheapest?

Mid January through February and the June rainy season. Because it is a business city, weekends are sometimes cheaper than weekdays. Avoid Golden Week, Obon, New Year and big concert dates at the Nagoya Dome.

Where should I stay in Nagoya?

Nagoya Station for business or a short stay, Sakae for shopping and nightlife, Kanayama or Osu to save money with the airport train close by.

Is Agoda the cheapest for Nagoya hotels?

It depends. Agoda's issuer channels differ from one another, and Japanese chains sometimes undercut them with a member rate. Compare the channels first, then check Trip.com and the hotel's own site on the same dates.
