Travel times are estimates from straight-line distance and the city's average transit speed. Real routes differ, so use them to compare bases rather than to plan a day. Time at each spot is an estimate, 2 hours by default. Places that take a whole day, such as a theme park, are set longer.

How to book Macau for less

Choose a Macau property on Agoda, copy the page link and paste it into Tripdify. The extension reads the price on every card, map and search channel and sorts by tax-inclusive total.

Under the results, check the same property on Trip.com, Hotellook and Expedia, and open flights, activities and eSIM for the same dates. Card-channel prices apply only when you pay with that card.

Cheapest Jun, SepPeak Feb, May, Oct, Dec

Read from this city's own twelve months. The table below adds the temperature and rainfall for each one.

Macau is most expensive over Lunar New Year and the two Mainland Golden Weeks in early October and early May, with further peaks for the Macau Grand Prix in November, Christmas and the New Year countdown. The bigger pattern is weekly: visitors pour in from Hong Kong and Guangdong on Friday and Saturday nights, and a casino resort can charge close to double its weekday rate on a Saturday. Sunday to Thursday nights are the value, and the hot typhoon months from June to September are the cheapest season. Book midweek and you get the same resort at a fraction of the weekend price.

Macau month by month

Currency and card payments

The currency is the Macau pataca, but the Hong Kong dollar is accepted everywhere at close to par and casinos and hotels quote in it. Change comes back in patacas, which are hard to spend once you leave, so keep small amounts. Hotels, casino resorts and malls take cards, but old restaurants, egg tart bakeries and markets are cash. Macau hotels habitually list room rates before a 5 percent government tax and a 10 percent service charge, which makes the gap between the headline rate and the total larger than in Hong Kong, so compare Agoda channels on the total including tax.

Where booking pays off

Macau's market is dominated by the big Cotai casino resorts, and here Trip.com is every bit as strong as Agoda because so many guests come from the Mainland. Trip.com often carries its own discount on those resorts, while Agoda's card issuer channels split the same room by several percent. The resorts' own sites sometimes add dining credit or show tickets to a member rate, so it pays to look at all three on the same dates. Paste the Agoda link into Tripdify to sort the channels by total including tax, then open the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia from the links. Tripdify does not read prices from those sites.

Where to stay

Cotai is the strip of connected mega resorts such as the Venetian and the Londoner, where shopping, shows and dinner are all under one roof and the rooms are large. The Macau peninsula around Senado Square and the ruins of St Paul's puts the heritage streets and old restaurants on foot and is cheaper for the same class of hotel, though some of the older casino hotels there show their age. Free casino shuttle buses run constantly between Cotai and the peninsula, so staying on one side does not cut you off from the other.

Airport to the city

Macau airport sits next to Cotai, so a taxi to the resorts takes about ten minutes, and most casino resorts run free shuttle buses from the airport and both ferry terminals, so look for the shuttle bays first. From Hong Kong the ferries from Sheung Wan or Tsim Sha Tsui take about an hour, and from Hong Kong airport the shuttle bus across the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge takes about 45 minutes. Transit passengers at Hong Kong airport can also board a ferry to Macau without clearing Hong Kong immigration. Within Macau the public buses are cheap and taxis can be scarce at busy hours.
