Travel times are estimates from straight-line distance and the city's average transit speed. Real routes differ, so use them to compare bases rather than to plan a day. Time at each spot is an estimate, 2 hours by default. Places that take a whole day, such as a theme park, are set longer.

How to book Kyoto for less

Choose a Kyoto property on Agoda, copy the page link and paste it into Tripdify. The extension reads the price on every card, map and search channel and sorts by tax-inclusive total.

Under the results, check the same property on Trip.com, Hotellook and Expedia, and open flights, activities and eSIM for the same dates. Card-channel prices apply only when you pay with that card.

Read from this city's own twelve months. The table below adds the temperature and rainfall for each one.

Kyoto has the sharpest seasonal swing in Japan. Cherry blossom in late March and early April and autumn foliage from mid to late November push the same room far above its usual rate, and popular places sell out months ahead. Golden Week, the Gion Matsuri in July, Obon in mid August and the New Year holiday are also expensive. Mid January through February, the June rainy season and the humid late July to early August stretch are the reliable low points. Because Osaka is about half an hour away by train, sleeping in Osaka and visiting Kyoto by day is a common way around peak prices.

Kyoto month by month

Currency and card payments

The currency is the yen. Hotels and department stores take cards, but temple admission counters, Nishiki market stalls, old tea houses and many small restaurants in Kyoto are still cash only, so you will need more notes here than in Tokyo or Osaka. Pay in yen at checkout rather than letting the site convert to your home currency. Kyoto City levies an accommodation tax on every stay, charged per person per night in bands that rise with the room rate, and it is normally collected at the property rather than included in the online total.

Traveler tax refund

Tax free shopping and VAT refunds

In Japan the tax comes off in the shop. Show your passport at a tax free counter and spend over the store minimum, and the consumption tax is deducted on the spot; consumables such as food and cosmetics are sealed in a bag you keep closed until you leave the country.

Where booking pays off

Agoda's issuer channels do differ in Kyoto, but in peak season availability matters more than the channel, so for cherry blossom and foliage dates compare early and book rather than wait for a better rate. Ryokan and machiya town houses are often thin on Agoda and may only list on their own site or Japanese domestic portals such as Rakuten Travel and Jalan. Japanese chains sometimes offer a lower member rate, and Trip.com is strong on Japanese hotels with its own promotions. Tripdify sorts the Agoda channel prices by total including tax and links the same dates on Trip.com, Expedia and others, but it does not read those sites' prices, so check them yourself.

Where to stay

Around Kyoto Station is the practical first choice: the Haruka airport train, the Shinkansen and most city bus routes start there, and the stock of chain hotels keeps prices broad. Kawaramachi and Gion are the most atmospheric for evenings on foot but are the first to become expensive in peak season. The Karasuma and Shijo area sits on the subway with plenty of business hotels and easy access in every direction. Arashiyama is quiet and good for a ryokan night but a long ride from the centre. When cherry blossom or foliage prices become unreasonable, staying in Osaka's Umeda and commuting by Hankyu or JR is a realistic alternative.

Airport to the city

Kyoto has no airport of its own. From Kansai Airport the JR Haruka reaches Kyoto Station in about 75 minutes, and the discounted foreign visitor ticket bought online in advance is cheaper than the walk up fare. The limousine bus takes about the same time for less money. From Osaka, the Hankyu line reaches Kawaramachi and the JR special rapid reaches Kyoto Station in roughly half an hour, so the Shinkansen is unnecessary for that hop. Itami Airport, for domestic flights, has a direct bus to Kyoto Station in about an hour. Inside the city, subway plus walking beats the buses in peak season, when the buses crawl.

Kyoto hotels: common questions

When are Kyoto hotels cheapest?

Mid January through February, the June rainy season and the hot late July to early August weeks. Cherry blossom and November foliage are the opposite extreme and sell out months ahead, so consider sleeping in Osaka then.

Where is the best area to stay in Kyoto?

Kyoto Station for transport and price, Kawaramachi or Gion for evenings on foot, Karasuma if you want the subway at your door.

Can I book a Kyoto ryokan on Agoda?

Some are listed, but many small ryokan and machiya appear only on their own site or on Japanese portals like Rakuten Travel and Jalan. Compare the Agoda channels for what is listed, then check the property's own site on the same dates.
