06 · Good to know
Know before you book in Kota Kinabalu
Currency and card payments
The currency is the Malaysian ringgit. Resorts, malls and chain restaurants take cards, but the Filipino Market night market, the Gaya Street Sunday market and tour counters for the islands expect cash, and Grab is cheap and easiest paid in the app. Pay hotels in ringgit rather than your home currency. Malaysia charges foreign guests a flat tourism tax per room per night, collected by the hotel at check in and usually missing from the online total, and a conservation fee is paid in cash when you enter the Tunku Abdul Rahman marine park. Compare Agoda channels on the total including tax and budget for those two separately.
Where booking pays off
Kota Kinabalu draws a big share of its resort guests from Korea, so Agoda's card issuer channels spread widely at the large Tanjung Aru and Sutera Harbour resorts, and the same room can differ by several percent between channels, more in holiday weeks. Agoda carries deep Malaysian inventory, the big resorts sometimes add breakfast or an airport pickup to member rates on their own sites, and Trip.com is strong for city hotels popular with Chinese visitors. Paste the Agoda link into Tripdify to sort the channels by total including tax, then open the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia from the links. Tripdify reads Agoda prices only, so check the others yourself.
Where to stay
For a resort stay with a sunset view, Tanjung Aru and Sutera Harbour sit right by the airport and about ten minutes from the centre, and some island boats leave from the resort jetties. The city centre around the waterfront puts the Filipino Market night market, the seafood restaurants and Jesselton Point, where the island boats leave, within walking distance, and costs far less than the resorts for the same class. Likas is a quiet residential area near the City Mosque and the bayside path, and Karambunai to the north is a secluded resort strip about 40 minutes out. To climb Mount Kinabalu or linger in Kundasang, add a separate night near the park.
Airport to the city
Kota Kinabalu International Airport is about 8 kilometres southwest of the centre: Grab or a taxi takes 15 to 20 minutes to town, around 10 minutes to Tanjung Aru and Sutera Harbour, and about 40 minutes to Karambunai. Grab is the cheapest and easiest and has a marked pickup zone, while airport taxis work on fixed price coupons bought at the counter by destination. An airport bus runs to the city centre, though it saves little over Grab. Late night arrivals are common on flights from Northeast Asia, when a prebooked resort pickup saves effort. Kinabalu Park is about two hours by road, reached by tour van or a hired car.
