When is it cheapest to visit Kaohsiung?

Kaohsiung sits in the far south of Taiwan, so winters are warm, and the dry, milder months from October to April are the best time to visit. May to September is hot with frequent rain, and July to September is typhoon season, when the same room costs clearly less. The dearest weeks are Lunar New Year, the October national day holiday and the New Year countdown. Domestic travellers fill the city on weekends, so Friday and Saturday nights cost more than weeknights. In summer a typhoon can reschedule flights, so a refundable rate is the safer choice.

Kaohsiung local costs and payment

The currency is the New Taiwan dollar. Hotels, department stores and convenience stores take cards, but night markets such as Liuhe and Ruifeng and small eateries are often cash only, so carry more cash than you would in Taipei. Both iPASS, the transit card that started in Kaohsiung, and Taipei's EasyCard work on the metro, the light rail and in convenience stores. Pay hotels in local currency and decline conversion to your home currency. Taiwan has no separate hotel tax, so the headline rate is close to the total, though some hotels add a 10 percent service charge.
