Los Angeles seasons and room prices

Los Angeles hotel rates peak in the summer school holidays from June through August, over Thanksgiving week, and from Christmas into the New Year. Spring break in March, the Rose Parade in Pasadena on January 1, and the LA Marathon weekend in March also lift prices in the neighbourhoods around them. The reliable low points are mid January through February, once the holiday crowds have gone, and the weeks after Labor Day from mid September into October, when the weather is at its best and beach hotels drop noticeably. Coastal areas such as Santa Monica carry a weekend premium, so a midweek stay there costs less than a Friday and Saturday.

Los Angeles local costs and payment

The currency is the US dollar and cards, including contactless, are accepted almost everywhere, with tipping expected at restaurants, in taxis and for hotel staff. The City of Los Angeles charges a transient occupancy tax of about 14 percent on the room rate plus a small tourism assessment, and some hotels in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and around the beaches add a resort or amenity fee collected at check in. Most booking sites leave those out of the headline total, so open the price breakdown before you pay. Hotel parking is charged per night and can be substantial if you rent a car, and at checkout choose to be billed in dollars rather than your home currency.
