Hong Kong seasons and room prices
Hong Kong hotel rates jump over Lunar New Year and during the two Mainland Golden Week holidays in early October and early May, when the city fills with visitors from across the border. Trade fairs in April and October, Art Basel in late March and the Rugby Sevens push business hotels up as well. The pleasant dry months from October to December are popular and priced accordingly. The cheapest stretches are the hot and humid typhoon season from July to September and the weeks right after Lunar New Year in February. Weekend nights cost more than weekday nights in most districts.
Hong Kong local costs and payment
The currency is the Hong Kong dollar, pegged to the US dollar. Hotels, malls and chain restaurants take cards, but many cha chaan tengs, noodle shops and market stalls want cash or an Octopus card. Buy an Octopus at the airport and it covers the MTR, buses, ferries, convenience stores and a lot of small eateries. Pay the hotel in Hong Kong dollars rather than in your home currency. Hong Kong reintroduced a 3 percent hotel accommodation tax in 2025 and hotels add a 10 percent service charge on top, so compare Agoda channels on the total including tax.
