Travel times are estimates from straight-line distance and the city's average transit speed. Real routes differ, so use them to compare bases rather than to plan a day. Time at each spot is an estimate, 2 hours by default. Places that take a whole day, such as a theme park, are set longer.

How to book Lisbon for less

Choose a Lisbon property on Agoda, copy the page link and paste it into Tripdify. The extension reads the price on every card, map and search channel and sorts by tax-inclusive total.

Under the results, check the same property on Trip.com, Hotellook and Expedia, and open flights, activities and eSIM for the same dates. Card-channel prices apply only when you pay with that card.

Cheapest Jan, Feb, Nov

A regional seasonality estimate; see the notes below for this city and its specifics.

Lisbon is most expensive from June through September. June brings the Santo António festival, when the old town turns into one long street party on the night of June 12 into the 13th, and the NOS Alive music festival in July lifts city rates again. Web Summit in early to mid November fills the city with tens of thousands of attendees, so rooms run short in what is otherwise a quiet month. The cheapest stretch is January and February after the New Year holidays, rainy but mild. Weekends carry a premium from European short breaks, so a Sunday to Thursday stay usually costs less.

Currency and card payments

The currency is the euro, and cards and contactless payment work in hotels and most restaurants and shops. Small tascas and neighbourhood cafes sometimes take cash only or set a minimum, so carry a little cash. The bread, olives and cheese placed on the table before you order are not free and appear on the bill if you eat them. Tipping is optional, usually just leaving the change. The city charges a tourist tax of 4 euros per person per night for guests aged 13 and over, capped at seven nights, usually collected by the property at check in or check out and often missing from the booking site total. Use bank Multibanco machines for cash and decline conversion into your home currency.

Where booking pays off

Portugal is Booking.com's strongest market, with hotels and a large number of licensed short stay apartments, known locally as Alojamento Local, and Expedia and Hotels.com are solid on the international chains. Agoda's inventory is thinner here, but its issuer channels still differ by a few percent on the chains and are worth a look. Small boutique hotels in the old town often reward direct booking on their own site with breakfast or a discount. Paste an Agoda link into Tripdify to sort every issuer channel by total including tax and open the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia. The city tourist tax is normally paid at the property whichever site you use, so leave it out of the comparison.

Where to stay

Baixa and Chiado are the easiest first visit base: nearly flat, close to Praça do Comércio, the trams and the metro, at prices on the high side. Bairro Alto just above turns into a bar district every night and stays loud until the small hours, so light sleepers should look elsewhere. Alfama has the most atmospheric lanes in the city, but the hills and cobbles make wheeling a suitcase hard work. Avenida da Liberdade and Príncipe Real are quieter, with upscale and boutique hotels. Parque das Nações is close to the airport and Oriente station and has newer, cheaper hotels, but the old town is twenty minutes or more away by metro, and Belém is peaceful but far from the centre.

Airport to the city

Lisbon Airport sits about seven kilometres from the centre, one of the closest in Europe. The red metro line runs from the airport station, and with one change to the green line at Alameda you reach Baixa Chiado in thirty to forty minutes for the price of an ordinary city fare, using a rechargeable Navegante card from the station machines. Taxis, Uber and Bolt take fifteen to twenty five minutes into town outside the rush and are cheap by European standards, so with heavy bags or two or three people they are the easier choice. Lodgings in the narrow lanes of Alfama can be hard to reach by car, so check where the driver can actually stop.
