Budapest's sharpest price spikes come with the Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend in late July and the Sziget Festival on Obuda Island in mid August, when rates can reach several times the usual level. The St. Stephen's Day fireworks on 20 August, the Christmas markets on Vorosmarty Square and in front of St. Stephen's Basilica from mid November to the end of the year, and New Year's Eve are also expensive. May through September is high season overall, and weekend visitors from across Europe make Friday and Saturday nights clearly dearer than weekdays. The cheapest stretch is mid January through March once the markets close, which is cold but the best time of year for the thermal baths.

Currency and card payments

Hungary uses the forint, not the euro. Cards and contactless work in hotels, restaurants and most shops, and some tourist businesses accept euros, but at a poor rate, so pay in forint. For cash, use a bank ATM and avoid the independent machines found around tourist streets, and always decline any offer to charge you in your home currency. Budapest's tourism tax is set by each district, either as a percentage of the room rate or as a flat amount per person per night. Some booking sites leave it out of the online total and the hotel collects it on site, so check before you compare, and choose forint as the card currency at checkout.

Where booking pays off

Booking.com has the deepest Budapest inventory, including most of the apartment stock that fills Districts V and VII. Chain hotels such as Marriott, Hilton and Accor often match or beat third parties with member rates on their own sites, and some small boutique hotels quote a little less when contacted directly by email. Agoda's card issuer channels apply in Budapest, but the spread is narrower than in Asia, a few percent at most, and the totals may leave out the tourism tax. Tripdify reads the Agoda channels, sorts them by total including tax and links the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia. It does not read prices from those sites, so open them and compare the totals yourself before paying.

Where to stay

Belvaros in District V, home to Parliament and St. Stephen's Basilica, puts the riverside and the main sights on foot but costs the most. Terezvaros in District VI has the Opera and Andrassy Avenue, with metro line M1 running out to Heroes' Square and the Szechenyi Baths. Erzsebetvaros in District VII is the ruin bar quarter, great for nightlife but loud until the small hours at weekends, so skip it if you want a quiet room. Districts VIII and IX are noticeably cheaper for the same class, and the Kalvin Square area in District IX has a stop on the 100E airport bus, which helps on the first and last night. Across the river, the Castle District in District I is quiet and scenic but has few hotels and steep streets.

Airport to the city

Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport has no rail link into the city, so the airport bus is the default. The 100E Airport Express leaves from Terminal 2 and runs via Kalvin Square and Astoria to Deak Ferenc Square in about 40 minutes; ordinary tickets and the 24 hour travel card are not valid, so buy the dedicated airport ticket. The cheaper option is bus 200E to Kobanya Kispest and metro line M3, which accepts ordinary tickets but takes longer. Fotaxi, the airport's official taxi partner, runs from the arrivals hall on zone based fares and takes 30 to 40 minutes to the centre, and Bolt is also available. With heavy luggage or a late arrival, a taxi is the easier choice.
