Vienna seasons and room prices

Vienna's most expensive weeks are the Christmas markets, which fill Rathausplatz and squares across the centre from mid November to late December, and New Year's Eve. January and February look like low season but carry the ball season, including the Opera Ball, and the city is one of Europe's busiest congress venues, so a large medical congress can lift rates around the Austria Center and in the centre with little warning. May through September is the main tourist season, and the Donauinselfest weekend in late June is busy too. The cheapest nights are usually mid January once the holidays end, weekdays in February without a big congress, and early November before the markets open. Comparing prices date by date is the only reliable way to spot a congress week.

Vienna local costs and payment

The currency is the euro. Cards and contactless work in hotels, department stores and most restaurants, but some Heurigen wine taverns, traditional cafes and market stalls still take cash only, so carry a few euros. When an ATM or card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in euros at your bank's rate. Vienna levies its accommodation tax as a percentage of the net room rate, which rose to 5 percent on 1 July 2026, with a further increase already scheduled for 2027. Many booking sites leave it out of the online total and the hotel adds it at checkout, so check whether it is included before you compare prices.
