Peak season is June, July, August, and December, when rooms cost the most.

Vancouver seasons and room prices

Vancouver is most expensive from June through September and ranks among the priciest North American cities for downtown hotels in summer. From May to October, Alaska cruises sail from Canada Place, and downtown rooms fill first on the Friday and Saturday around embarkation. Canada Day on July 1 and the Celebration of Light fireworks over English Bay in late July and early August push prices up sharply. The cheapest stretch is November through March, wet but mild, although Whistler lodging climbs over Christmas, New Year and the peak ski weeks. Direct flights across the Pacific are frequent, so the extra cost of a summer trip is mostly the hotel, not the airfare.

Vancouver local costs and payment

The currency is the Canadian dollar, and cards and tap to pay work almost everywhere, with tips of fifteen to twenty percent expected in restaurants and taxis. The thing to watch is lodging tax: in British Columbia a room carries the federal goods and services tax of 5 percent, provincial sales tax of 8 percent and a municipal accommodation tax of up to 3 percent, and some hotels add a destination marketing fee on top. North American booking sites often lead with the pre tax rate, so the price can rise by more than fifteen percent at checkout; compare totals including tax. Downtown hotel parking is charged per night and is expensive. Pay in Canadian dollars and decline home currency conversion.
