Taipei seasons and room prices
Taipei is most expensive over Lunar New Year, when many restaurants and shops also close for several days, and again around the October national day holiday and the New Year countdown. The plum rain season in May and June and the typhoon months from July to September are the cheaper stretches, with the caveat that a typhoon can cancel flights, so pick refundable rates in summer. Autumn from October to November has the most comfortable weather and moderate prices. Weekend nights cost clearly more because of the short break traffic from Korea, Japan and Hong Kong.
Taipei local costs and payment
The currency is the New Taiwan dollar. Hotels, department stores and convenience stores take cards, but night markets, small restaurants and older shops are often cash only, so cash still matters here. An EasyCard covers the metro, buses and convenience store purchases and saves fumbling with coins. Pay the hotel in local currency rather than accepting a conversion to your home currency. Taipei charges no separate hotel or tourist tax, so the gap between the headline rate and the total is small, though some hotels add a 10 percent service charge.
