Sydney seasons and room prices
Sydney sits in the southern hemisphere, so December to February is summer and high season. New Year's Eve, with the harbour fireworks, is the single most expensive night of the year, and Australian school holidays keep family demand high until late January. Vivid Sydney, the light festival from late May into June, lifts city centre prices again. Winter from June to August is mild, easy to walk around and the cheapest stretch outside Vivid, while March, April, October and November balance weather and price well. Most long haul flights land early in the morning, so decide whether an extra night for a guaranteed morning check in is worth it.
Sydney local costs and payment
The currency is the Australian dollar, and cards work almost everywhere with tap to pay the norm, so cash is rarely needed. Many cafes and restaurants add a card surcharge of one to two percent, shown on the receipt, and there is no tipping culture. Hotel prices are normally displayed inclusive of the goods and services tax, so the headline rate and the total rarely diverge much between sites. Resort fees are not a thing here, but hotel parking in the city centre is expensive enough to matter if you drive. Pay in Australian dollars and decline home currency conversion.
