Phu Quoc's dry season runs from November to April, and December to March is the peak, with the calmest sea and the clearest skies. Resort rates climb highest over Christmas and New Year, around Tet, the Vietnamese lunar new year in late January or February, and during the Korean and Chinese holiday weeks, when flights from Northeast Asia fill the big resorts. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings the rainy season: the west coast at Long Beach and Bai Dai gets rough surf and seaweed, but prices drop sharply and the east coast beaches such as Sao and Kem stay calmer. Rain usually falls hard for an hour or two and then clears.
Phu Quoc local costs and payment
The currency is the Vietnamese dong. The big Vinpearl and Sun Group resorts and the restaurants in Grand World and Sunset Town take cards readily, but the Duong Dong night market, local seafood places and massage shops are easier with cash. Gold shops and banks in town beat the airport rate, so change only enough for the first ride on arrival. Pay hotels and theme parks in dong and refuse conversion into your home currency. Vietnamese hotels often quote rooms before VAT and a 5 percent service charge, so always compare Agoda channels on the total including tax.
