Osaka seasons and room prices
Osaka rooms peak for cherry blossom in late March and early April, during Golden Week at the end of April into early May, and over the New Year holiday. Mid August Obon and autumn weekends, when Universal Studios Japan runs its Halloween season and the Kyoto foliage crowds spill over, are also expensive. Mid January through February and the June rainy season are the reliable low points. Osaka draws a lot of short weekend trips from Korea, Taiwan and China, so Friday and Saturday nights carry a clear premium and a Sunday check in can be far cheaper for the same room.
Osaka local costs and payment
The currency is the yen. Hotels, department stores and chains take cards, but Kuromon market stalls, older restaurants and small izakaya in Osaka are still often cash only, so keep some notes on hand. At checkout pay in yen rather than accepting the booking site's conversion to your home currency, which hides a margin. Osaka Prefecture charges an accommodation tax per person per night on rooms above a price threshold, usually collected at the front desk, and it is often missing from online totals. Read the fine print on card promotions, since some require a specific billing currency.
