When is it cheapest to visit Okinawa?

Okinawa is cheapest to visit in February, June, and November.

Peak season is March, April, July, August, and December, when rooms cost the most.

Okinawa seasons and room prices

Okinawa is a beach destination, so summer is the peak: late July through Obon in mid August is the most expensive stretch, and Golden Week, the New Year holiday and the late March spring break are also high. The rainy season runs from early May to late June, after which beach season opens in earnest. September and October stay warm but carry typhoon risk, and prices ease accordingly. The cheapest weeks are December and mid January through February, too cool for swimming but fine for driving and sightseeing. Resort hotels swing far more with the season than city hotels in Naha, which are steadier year round.

Okinawa local costs and payment

The currency is the yen. Naha and the big resort hotels take cards, but Makishi market, small restaurants up north, beach kiosks and the outer islands are often cash only, so carry more notes than you would in Tokyo. Pay in yen at checkout rather than accepting the site's conversion to your home currency. Okinawa Prefecture has been introducing an accommodation tax, so check whether the total shown at booking includes local taxes. Most visitors rent a car, so budget for fuel, expressway tolls and resort parking, which the room rate rarely includes.
