Macau seasons and room prices
Macau is most expensive over Lunar New Year and the two Mainland Golden Weeks in early October and early May, with further peaks for the Macau Grand Prix in November, Christmas and the New Year countdown. The bigger pattern is weekly: visitors pour in from Hong Kong and Guangdong on Friday and Saturday nights, and a casino resort can charge close to double its weekday rate on a Saturday. Sunday to Thursday nights are the value, and the hot typhoon months from June to September are the cheapest season. Book midweek and you get the same resort at a fraction of the weekend price.
Macau local costs and payment
The currency is the Macau pataca, but the Hong Kong dollar is accepted everywhere at close to par and casinos and hotels quote in it. Change comes back in patacas, which are hard to spend once you leave, so keep small amounts. Hotels, casino resorts and malls take cards, but old restaurants, egg tart bakeries and markets are cash. Macau hotels habitually list room rates before a 5 percent government tax and a 10 percent service charge, which makes the gap between the headline rate and the total larger than in Hong Kong, so compare Agoda channels on the total including tax.
