Kuala Lumpur seasons and room prices
Kuala Lumpur is hot and humid all year, so holidays rather than weather set the price. Lunar New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri, whose dates move earlier each year, are the expensive stretches, and during Hari Raya it is the flights and intercity transport that sell out first. Deepavali, the year end and the December school holidays also push rates up. The wetter months from March to April and October to November run a little cheaper, and Ramadan quiets the tourist trade so hotels soften, though some restaurants close by day. The city is well supplied with hotels, so prices rarely spike as hard as in Singapore.
Kuala Lumpur local costs and payment
The currency is the Malaysian ringgit. Hotels, malls and chain restaurants take cards, but street stalls, mamak eateries and markets are cash, and Grab is easiest paid through the app. Pay the hotel in ringgit rather than in your home currency. Malaysia charges foreign guests a flat tourism tax per room per night, collected by the hotel at check in and usually missing from the online total, and many hotels add a sales and service tax and a service charge on top. Compare Agoda channels on the total including tax and budget for the tourism tax separately.
