Fukuoka seasons and room prices
Fukuoka fills up with short trips from Korea all year, since Busan is a ferry ride away and Seoul barely more than an hour by air. Rooms peak during Golden Week from late April into early May, around the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival in early July, during Obon in mid August and over New Year. Concert weekends at the Fukuoka Dome or Marine Messe can send the whole city's prices up overnight, so check the event calendar before fixing dates. Mid January through February and the June rainy season are the reliable low points, and Sunday to Thursday nights are consistently cheaper than Friday and Saturday.
Fukuoka local costs and payment
The currency is the yen. Hotels, department stores and chains in Hakata and Tenjin take cards, but the yatai food stalls along the Nakasu river, market stalls and small ramen shops are largely cash only, so keep notes handy. Pay in yen at checkout rather than accepting the site's conversion to your own currency. Fukuoka charges an accommodation tax per person per night, with a higher band for expensive rooms, and it is normally collected at the hotel rather than shown in the online total. Read card promotion terms carefully, because some tie the discount to a specific billing currency.
