Barcelona is most expensive from May through September, with extra spikes for Primavera Sound in early June, the Sant Joan festival on June 23 and La Mercè in late September. The Mobile World Congress in late February or early March is the single worst week, when city hotels multiply their rates, so avoid it outright. Cruise days bring crowds to the old town but barely move hotel prices. The cheapest stretch is November and mid January through mid February, when the days are still pleasant for walking. Weekends carry a premium because of short breaks from elsewhere in Europe, so a Sunday to Thursday stay is cheaper.

The currency is the euro and cards work almost everywhere, though small change is handy at markets and neighbourhood bars. Barcelona stacks two taxes on hotel stays: the Catalan regional tourist tax and a city surcharge on top of it, both charged per person per night by hotel category and capped at seven nights, and the city surcharge has risen sharply in recent years, so on a higher category hotel it is a real sum. Most booking sites leave both out of the online total and the hotel collects them at check in. Pickpocketing is common, so carry little cash, and pay in euros at checkout rather than accepting a conversion.
