Bali seasons and room prices
Bali is dry from April to October and wet from November to March. Hotels are dearest in July and August, when European and Australian holidays overlap, and from Christmas into early January, with smaller peaks at Easter and each Australian school break. Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu new year in March, closes the airport and confines everyone indoors for a full day, so check the date before you book around it. November and late February into March are the cheap months, and the rain tends to arrive in an afternoon downpour rather than lasting all day. The dry season shoulder in May and June is the best compromise.
Bali local costs and payment
The currency is the Indonesian rupiah, and the large denominations confuse everyone at first. Hotels, resorts and bigger restaurants take cards, while warungs, small shops and temple entry are cash, so use an authorised money changer rather than a street kiosk. Resorts commonly add a combined government tax and service charge of twenty one percent, and sites differ in whether they show it up front, so compare only the total including tax. Bali also charges foreign visitors a one time tourist levy, payable online in advance or on arrival. Pay in rupiah or dollars and decline home currency conversion.
