A regional seasonality estimate; see the notes below for this city and its specifics.

Amsterdam is cheapest to visit in January, February, and November.

Peak season is May, June, July, and August, when rooms cost the most.

Amsterdam seasons and room prices

Amsterdam is dearest during tulip season from late March to mid May, around King's Day on 27 April, and through the summer from June to August. King's Day night is among the priciest of the year, and the Pride Canal Parade weekend in early August, Amsterdam Dance Event in the second half of October and the big broadcast technology fair at the RAI in September also lift rates across the city. Late December into the New Year is expensive as well. The cheapest stretch is January and February after the holidays, plus November, which bring rain and wind but noticeably lower prices for the same room. Central rooms are small and scarce, so booking early pays off in the busy months.

Amsterdam local costs and payment

The currency is the euro. The Netherlands is one of the most card based countries in Europe, so cash is rarely needed and many shops and cafes do not take it at all. Small shops occasionally decline foreign credit cards, so carrying two cards on different networks is a sensible backup. When a terminal offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in euros. Taxes weigh heavily on rooms here: the city tourist tax is 12.5 percent of the room price excluding VAT, and VAT on accommodation rose from 9 percent to 21 percent in January 2026. Some booking sites leave the tourist tax out of the online total, so always compare totals with every tax included.
