Travel times are estimates from straight-line distance and the city's average transit speed. Real routes differ, so use them to compare bases rather than to plan a day. Time at each spot is an estimate, 2 hours by default. Places that take a whole day, such as a theme park, are set longer.

How to book Ulaanbaatar for less

Choose a Ulaanbaatar property on Agoda, copy the page link and paste it into Tripdify. The extension reads the price on every card, map and search channel and sorts by tax-inclusive total.

Under the results, check the same property on Trip.com, Hotellook and Expedia, and open flights, activities and eSIM for the same dates. Card-channel prices apply only when you pay with that card.

A regional seasonality estimate; see the notes below for this city and its specifics.

Ulaanbaatar's travel season is short. June to August is the peak, and the Naadam festival around July 11 is the dearest week of the year, when city hotels and the ger camps in Terelj fill early. September is cooler, cheaper and a good choice, though nights turn cold. From November to March temperatures often drop below minus 20 degrees and heating smoke thickens the air, so hotels are cheapest but conditions are hard. Summer flights rise before rooms do, so book flights and hotels together and early. Check the current entry rules for your passport before you go.

Currency and card payments

The currency is the Mongolian tugrik. Hotels, supermarkets, restaurants and department stores in central Ulaanbaatar take cards readily, so in town you can get by almost entirely on a card. Outside the centre it changes: Narantuul Market, Terelj and the extras at ger camps often need cash, so withdraw tugrik from a bank ATM in the city before heading out. US dollars are also easy to exchange. Sites differ on whether VAT and the city tax are included in hotel rates, so compare on the total, and pay in tugrik rather than accepting conversion to your home currency.

Where booking pays off

International chains and larger hotels in central Ulaanbaatar are listed across Agoda, Booking.com and Trip.com, so the spread between Agoda's card issuer channels is worth comparing. Ger camps in Terelj are different: online inventory is thin and many sell packages with meals and pickup, so booking through the camp directly or a local tour operator is often cheaper or the only option. During Naadam every channel sells out early, so hold a refundable rate first. Paste the Agoda link into Tripdify to sort the channels by total including tax, then open the same dates on Trip.com and Expedia.

Where to stay

Sukhbaatar Square is the easiest first base, with the National Museum, the Chinggis Khaan National Museum and the Choijin Lama Temple on foot and the upscale hotels clustered around it. Seoul Street and Peace Avenue around the State Department Store have plenty of restaurants, cafes and mid range hotels, a good balance of price and convenience. Zaisan, below the hill to the south, is newer and quieter with many serviced apartments, but traffic can make the ride to the centre slow. Terelj is a national park about an hour and a half away by car, where you spend a night or more in a ger camp.

Airport to the city

Chinggis Khaan International Airport opened in 2021 and sits about 50 kilometres south of the city. A taxi or hotel pickup takes around an hour to the centre, longer at rush hour when city traffic jams. There are buses into town, but they are awkward with luggage. Use the official taxi counter or a pickup booked in advance rather than drivers touting in the hall. If you are heading straight to a ger camp in Terelj, book the vehicle transfer with the camp or tour operator.

Ulaanbaatar hotels: common questions

When are Ulaanbaatar hotels cheapest?

Winter from November to March is cheapest but bitterly cold. September is the best mix of weather and price, and Naadam in July is the dearest week.

Where should I stay in Ulaanbaatar?

Sukhbaatar Square for a first visit, Seoul Street for price and places to eat, and a night in a Terelj ger camp for the steppe.

How do I get from Ulaanbaatar airport to the city?

The airport is about 50 kilometres out, so an official taxi or hotel pickup at around an hour is easiest. Allow longer at rush hour.
